Pilgrimage to St. Michael's Cathedral

Published on Sunday, 30 September 2012

dscf6603copyIn honour of the anniversary of the dedication of St Michael’s Cathedral, the students of the Francis de Sales Centre made a walking pilgrimage to the cathedral this past Wednesday, the Feast of the North American Martyrs.

To get there the students opted for the more scenic – but longer – route along the lakeshore. To their credit, there was no “Are we almost there?” until we were in fact almost there. In all the students walked 8.5 kilometres before entering the church with 15 minutes to spare for rest and prayer before the start of the noonday Mass.

Sitting quietly in such a magnificent architectural testament to the faith, foresight and hard work of the Catholic community of 19th-century Toronto, and listening to a homily on the heroic sacrifices of those who established the Faith in our country two centuries earlier, we were reminded just how much we, and those who will come after us, depend on the groundbreaking toil of others.

After Mass we enjoyed an outdoor lunch and then headed back to the school – by streetcar!
